Entry into Politics


Congressional Career
In 2012, Jeffries was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing New York's 8th Congressional District. He has been a member of the House Judiciary Committee, the House Budget Committee, and the House Democratic Caucus. Jeffries has been a vocal advocate for progressive policies, including the Affordable Care Act, climate change legislation, and criminal justice reform. He has also been a strong supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and has worked to advance legislation to protect their rights.

In 2022, Jeffries made history by becoming the first African American to lead a major party in Congress when he was elected as the House Minority Leader.
